Getting a Divine Perspective on Human History

We are almost at the end of January.  My reading today was in Exodus 22-24 and Matthew 20:17-34.  If you are following the same schedule as I, then you know, in our Old Testament reading, we have passed the events surrounding the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, the momentous crossing of the Red Sea, and the dramatic encounter with God at Mt. Sinai.  In the 30 days of reading, hundreds of years have passed since God made His covenant with Abraham.  Thousands of years pass between the events of Exodus and Jesus’ life and ministry in Matthew.

What are we to make of this timeline?  One thing for sure: God’s schedule for unfolding His plan to redeem Man is not one which may be grasped by observing the events of a single life time.  The span of time between the birth of my grandparents and the death of my grandchildren may be more than 200 years.  Yet, apart from God’s revelation in the Bible, even that time span is far too short to detect the slowly unfolding purposes and works of the Eternal God.

Perhaps we need a bit more humility as we make assumptions based on what we see going on around us.  The Bible gives us a divine view of human history which should teach us that, just as the actors on the stage of history in the past could not understand all the ways God was working out His eternal decrees so, we, too, cannot understand even vaguely what He is doing apart from the wisdom He gives us in His Word.  One bit of that wisdom says,

“Be still, and know that I am God

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in  the earth.”  (Psalm 46:10)

As the first month of 2014 draws to a close, let us be unshaken in our trust in Him, our obedience to Him, and let us keep our eyes fixed on the new creation to come.

Meeting God in Genesis

Genesis, the first book of the Bible, lays the foundation for all that is to follow.  These foundations include:

1.  The actions and attributes of God.  He is self-existent, that is, He existed eternally before the beginning and was not created nor is He dependent on any thing or any one for His being.  He is sovereign, creating things merely by speaking them into existence.  He is wise and gracious, making all that is necessary for life that is good.  He reveals His will to Man, giving limits to man’s choices and warning of consequences should the limits be exceeded.  He oversees the affairs of men and nations, making apparently insignificant decisions and events work out for His great and good purposes.

2.  God’s salvation of Man. The need for salvation is shown (Genesis 3 and subsequent examples of the consequences of the Fall into sin and death).  The promise of salvation is revealed (Genesis 3:15 the offspring of the woman would crush the serpent’s head).  The means of salvation is designated (Genesis 12, 15, 17 God makes a covenant with Abraham to bless all the families of the earth through him, pointing to the Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Savior to come).

3.  Examples of obedient faith and disobedient rebellion.  Genesis zooms in on the personal lives of several characters showing why believing God results in blessing (Noah, Abraham, Joseph) while disobeying Him results in disaster (Adam & Eve, Cain, Esau).  We are both encouraged and admonished by these examples.

Here in Genesis, we get essential information to understand why mankind is in the mess we are in but also reassurance that God is still in control of our destiny and in Him we have a sure hope of deliverance and eternal life to come.

Praying to Feel More Needy

This is the fourth day of the year and so far I am up to date on my Bible reading.  How about you?

Thanks to a Christmas gift from a family member, I have my own [ie. don’t have to share with Mary 🙂 ] leather bound copy of The Valley of Vision which I am reading as part of my Quiet Time now. I was struck today by the prayer “God the Source of All Good” and the request “give me to feel a need of [Christ’s] continual saviorhood.”

I confess I usually pray for growth in sanctification. Am I in danger of seeking to escape from a sense of need of his continual saviorhood?  Do you pray for a greater sense of your sin which would promote that awareness of need for his continual saviorhood?

Maybe this is an element of prayer I need to include consciously and deliberately.

Why no daily posts?

There is a story about a fellow who had been out of work for some time.  He was desperate for a job but nothing opened up for him.  Then one day a circus came to his town.  He went to apply for a job.

“What can you do?” the circus manager asked him.

“I can jump off a 50 foot platform into a pile of sand,” the applicant confidently replied.

“OK, let’s see your act.” said the manager.

They set up the platform and dumped a pile of sand below.  The man climbed to the top,  waved, smiled and made a perfect dive into the sand.

The manager was ecstatic. He ran over to the applicant.  “You’re hired.  We’ve never had anyone do that.  You will bring down the house.”

The applicant got up slowly, brushed off the sand and said, “Give me some time to think about this job.  I’ve never done this before, and I don’t feel so good.”

Like the jobless guy, I’ve never done a daily blog before and I don’t feel so good. 🙂

The point is: I do not plan to write daily posts in 2014 as I am working on other writing projects.  The posts for 2013 are still accessible in the archives under the dates they were posted.  I will do occasional posts, just not every day.

I hope your new year is off to a good start and that you are not jumping off any platforms into sand piles.

Happy New Year

As 2014 begins,  I hope you are getting off to a good start.  Set some goals and get started doing things which will make a difference in your life for the glory of God.  My Bible reading plan [click here to see] is to read simultaneously through the Old and New Testaments beginning today and concluding on December 31.

John Flavel wrote:  The Scriptures teach us the best way of living, the noblest way of suffering, and the most comfortable way of dying.  [quoted in Ryken’s Bible Handbook p. 24].  Stay in the Word, my friends.
